Graphing Skills
Secondary School
Graphing skills for Secondary School students may involve students identifying the x and y axes, completing the correct scaling, and labelling of axes, identifying, and drawing line, bar, pie charts. Studies may also involve identifying ordered pairs, the dependent and independent variables in a set of related numbers, computing the y values from a given equation e.g., y= 4x +8, and being able to construct meaningful plots and graphs for given data. This may also involve being able to read and interpret data from graphs, for example estimating the speed of a vehicle from a distance time graph, estimating the value of y when x equals 10 etc. Describing different graphs as linear, exponential, or asymptotic, identifying trends from graphs, understanding how to graph continuous and discrete data, and a look at the purpose of integration may also be considered in this subject.
